When considering types of projection and the options available, I have looked at the two current open air cinemas in Manchester. One in Spinningfields (above) that is run weekly in the summer and has multiple lawns, deck chairs and audience participation through the pick of the film. The other resonates with a previous post about the drive-in cinema installation at Abandon Devices festival. Route 66 drive-in cinema is a traditional outdoor drive-in and boasts all the things to be expected.
These options raise questions for me about nostalgia and the audience. How can people be brought together into one experience? Increasingly we are spread out viewing media and art from our homes, alone on screens of increasing size but with fewer people to share it with. festivals, outdoor events and even the traditional cinema experience give the opportunity to bring people together.
